Packaging for Natural Oils: Bottles, Droppers and Labels That Protect Your Product

We fill and label oils every week, and we see the same thing again and again: a brand chooses a beautiful bottle, and the product suffers. Natural oils like argan and prickly pear seed oil are sensitive to light, air and heat. The right packaging protects them; the wrong one shortens their life and makes the brand look careless.

Rule 1: Protect the Oil From Light

Light speeds up oxidation, which is what makes oils go rancid.

Glass Protection Look
Amber Good Classic apothecary
Violet / dark Good Premium, distinctive
Frosted (clear underneath) Limited Elegant, but use with a box
Clear Poor Shows the colour, but needs a box and careful storage

**Our advice:** amber or dark glass for pure oils. If you love clear or frosted glass, sell it in a box and keep stock away from light.

Rule 2: Choose the Closure for the Use

Closure Best for Watch out for
Glass dropper Face oils, serums (15-50 ml) Check the bulb material is compatible with your oil, especially blends with essential oils
Pump Hair and body oils (50-200 ml) Choose a pump with the right output; too much oil per pump = complaints
Orifice reducer + cap Body and massage oils Simple and leak-resistant
Spray Light oil blends, dry oils Not suitable for thick oils

Rule 3: Labels That Survive Oil

This is the most common mistake we see. **Paper labels absorb oil**: one drip and the label is stained forever.

  • Use film labels (PP or similar) with an oil-resistant finish.
  • Leave enough space for the mandatory information: product name, INCI, net quantity, batch number, expiry or period-after-opening symbol, responsible person and origin.
  • Test the label on a filled bottle before printing thousands.

Rule 4: Fill Level and Air

Less air in the bottle means slower oxidation. Fill to the right level for the closure, and close quickly after filling. For bulk storage, keep containers full and tightly closed.

Rule 5: Tamper Evidence and Secondary Packaging

  • A tamper-evident seal or shrink band reassures customers and marketplaces.
  • A box protects from light, gives space for information and makes the product giftable.

Rule 6: Ship Glass Without Breakage

  • Dividers or moulded inserts in shipping cartons.
  • Bottles packed upright, closures tight, with a seal under the cap if possible.
  • Extra protection for air and express shipments, where handling is rougher.

Choosing Sizes

  • 15-30 ml: premium face oils (prickly pear seed oil, pure argan for the face).
  • 50-100 ml: argan oil for hair and body, blends.
  • 200 ml and more: professional and spa use.

Custom-moulded glass usually needs large minimum orders. For a first launch, a stock bottle with a well-designed label and box gives a premium result at a much lower minimum.

FAQ

What is the best bottle for argan oil?

Amber or dark glass with a dropper (face) or pump (hair and body) protects the oil best.

Can I sell argan oil in clear bottles?

Yes, but protect it with a box and keep stock away from light, because light shortens shelf life.

Why do my labels get stained?

Paper labels absorb oil. Use film labels with an oil-resistant finish.

Can I use plastic bottles?

Some plastics are suitable for oils, but glass is generally preferred for pure natural oils. Ask your supplier and test before ordering.
